The site of 255–259 Whitechapel Road was developed or redeveloped around 1675 when a 499-year manorial lease was granted. Humble early scale if not fabric survives, following reconstruction after a fire in 1873. Occupants included Lazarus Woolf, a dealer in china, glass and earthenware, around 1820.1
