11-13 New Road (along with 28 Nelson Street) is a rare example of a surviving building, put up in 1906 by Abraham Davis, second of the seven builder brothers Davis. That there were no more buildings of his may be the result of other projects of his failing around this time, including another one in New Road and one on the Commercial Road nearby which had been intended for a cinema: he was in severe financial trouble arising from his promotion of the so-called 'Moorish market' in Fashion Street. There are buildings on a similar pattern at the north western end of New Road, built by his youngest brothers N & R Davis.
